The pale yellowish color Elemi oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation from the soft, fragrant oleoresin of elemi tree (scientifically known as Canarium luzonicum). The oil extracted from oleoresin of elemi tree was extensively used in the preparation of soap, cosmetics, perfumes and paint industries. Over the years, Elemi was used in incense and soaps to soothe chest infections and as a steam inhalation for the problem of sinusitis. It was believed that elemi was used in ancient Egypt time for embalming mummies.
